Extracurricular Activities

A day after bringing the team yet another win at the last Rabbit Creek road race of the season (and posting the fastest time ever recorded on the course), Evan and Peter headed out to the Kenai to get a ride in on the Lost Lake trail. Check out the photos:

Also, Alyeska is building up some new trails that should be ready soon. They're going to be sick. Read about it here.

Success at Tour of Anchorage!

Team Speedway-Alyeska had its best tour in its 3 year history (okay, so this is our first year as Speedway-Alyeska, but we did exist as Alaska McDonald's last year, and Alaska Waste before that). We started the race with a super-strong team with outside favorites Dan Folmar and Evan Hyde. I'll spare the gritty details of each race, but here's the quick shake-down:
  • Prologue: Dan Folmar 3rd, Evan Hyde 4th, Jim Peot 5th
  • Stage 1, Clarks Road Hill Climb: A big win for Evan
  • Stage 2, Downtown Crit: Evan 3rd
  • Stage 3, Moose Run TT: Dan 2nd
  • Stage 4, Kincaid Road Race: Another big win by Carey Grumelot
  • Final overal: Dan 3rd
2 wins, 3rd overall, and at least a podium in every stage. Not too shaby. And it's important to point out that both wins were won the way real men do it, by taking a big gamble with a break.

Summer Update

It's August 1st, the sun is out, the Tour of Anchorage is around the corner, and Team Speedway-Alyeska is picking up steam. The last month we've picked up some great results. Among them:
  • 5 straight wins by Carey Grumelot in anything that involves the words cross, country, mountain, and bike.
  • Both 2nd and 3rd overall at the Fireweed 100 mile road race state championships by Dan Folmar and Seth Downs.
  • A big win by Carey at the Fireweed 200 mile road race.
  • 3rd place in the Clarks Road hill climb by Dan (6/4).
  • 2nd place in the Hope Road race by Seth (6/21).
  • 3rd place in the Stewarts Road hill climb TT by Dan (6/24).
  • 3rd place at Hatchers Pass hill climb State Championships by Seth (6/28)
  • 3rd place at Potter Valley hill climb by Seth (7/2).
  • 2nd in the Elmendorf Criterium by Dan (7/5).
  • A HUGE win by Dan and a 3rd by Jim Peot at the Downtown Criterium State Championships (7/16).
  • 3rd at the first Triple Crown Hill Climb by Dan (7/20).
  • 2nd at the Moose Run TT by Dan (7/23).
  • 2nd at the Knik Road Time Trial State Championships by Dan (7/27).
Dan and Carey deserve special recognition. Carey has won every mountain bike race he's entered this year, and by no small margin either. He also destroyed the field in the Fireweed 200 road race. Dan has come on super strong in the last few weeks, and has been crowed state crit champ. He won that rain-soaked race the way real men do it: by getting away on solo and lapping the rest of the field.

Next up is the Tour of Anchorage, and it looks like we've got at least one guy on the team that could contend, and we may have couple of secret weapons here to make things interesting.
